Italy's premier Mario Draghi on Thursday called for an unfettered supply of vaccines, calling them "a global common good' whose production must be increased "as a matter of priority".
"Vaccines are a global common good. It is a priority to increase their production, ensuring safety and removing obstacles to vaccination campaigns," Draghi said in a statement.
Draghi's remarks came after foreign minister Luigi Di Maio praised US president Joe Biden's remarks on Wednesday in support of a waiver on patents for Coronavirus vaccines.
Di Maio called for free access to anti-COVID-19 patents as lower income countries face acute vaccine shortages amid the pandemic and urged support for the move from other European countries.
