Venezuela's ambassador Julian Isaias Rodriguez Diaz told lawmakers on Wednesday his government was happy with a "balanced" resolution passed by Italy's parliament which called for free and fair presidential elections to be held swiftly in the crisis-hit nation.

"We are absolutely satisfied with the Italian parliament's resolution, which maintains a balanced position. The parliament did not express support for Maduro or for Guaido," Rodriguez Diaz said at a hearing at the Italian Senate.

"Venezuela is ready to dialogue - we have problem sitting down at a table and talking," Rodriguez Diaz said.

The resolution passed by Italy's Senate and Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday also urged humanitarian aid to Venezuela, where the population is facing drastic shortages of food and medicines amid an economic crisis.

Venezuela's leftist president Nicolas Maduro, who was re-elected in a contested 2018 vote marred by an opposition boycott and allegations of vote-rigging which triggered large protests.

Venezuela's opposition-held National Assembly leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president on 23 January, a move that Maduro has denounced as a US-backed coup attempt.

Three million people, or 10% of the population, have left the country since the economy started to worsen in 2014, according to figures from the United Nations.
