A 65-year-old believed to have been killed by a wild boar south of Rome on Thursday died of gunshot wounds to his femoral artery, an autospy revealed.
Coroners said they had found three buckshots inside a wound on Luciano Bondatti's leg, concluding that he most likely died in a hunting accident. Police have opened a murder investigation.
Earlier Bondatti's death sparked renewed calls to cull Italy's one-million boar population after a pensioner was gored to death by a pack of wild boars in Sicily last month.
Two men died in road accidents in central Italy in August when their cars collided with wild boars, which can weigh up to 100 kilogrammes.
