Police on Monday impounded some 350 million euros of assets including a wind farm from the brother of late Calabrian mafia boss Carmine Arena.

The wind farm in the Arena bastion of Isola di Capo Rizzuto in the province of Crotone and two other companies were impounded from Pasquale Arena on the orders of anti-mafia prosecutors in the Calabrian city of Catanzaro, finance police said.

The assets were initially seized in March from Arena and permanently confiscated on Monday after further investigations indicated they were mafia controlled, according to police.

Carmine Arena was killed with a bazooka during a mafia ambush in October 2004.

Drug trafficking, extortion and money-laundering rackets have in recent decades made the Calabrian mafia or 'Ndrangheta Italy's wealthiest and most powerful international crime syndicate.

It operates throughout Italy and overseas and its influence and networks extend from northern Europe to Australia and North and South America.

Investigators have seized hundreds of millions of euros of suspected 'Ndrangheta assets in recent years in an ongoing crackdown.
