A young woman was on Monday being treated for burns to 60 percent of her body at the plastic surgery unit of a hospital in the Sicilian port city of Messina after her jilted ex-boyfriend set her on fire.
Police have arrested the 24-year-old man, who on Sunday is said to have rung on the doorbell of his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend's apartment. When she opened the door, he allegedly pushed her inside, poured a cannister of petrol over her and lit a match.
The woman had ended her relationship with her former boyfriend several months earlier. The exes are both currently unemployed and had lived together, local daily La Sicilia said on its website.
