A United Arab Emirates woman, Alaa Bader al-Hashemi has been sentenced to death for killing a US teacher at a local shopping mall in December and of funding Al-Qaeda, regional reports said on Monday.

Hashemi, 30, was found guilty of Stabbing 47-year-old Ibolya Ryan to death with a large kitchen knife in a toilet at Reem Island mall in Abu Dhabi on 1 December.

She was also convicted of "creating a handmade bomb" she placed in front of an Egyptian-American doctor's home that failed to detonate and of sending money to Al-Qaeda in Yemen, knowing the funds would be used in terrorist acts, according to the reports.

Hashemi was also found guilty of using an online account to spread "information that ridiculed and harmed the country," Abu Dhabi daily The National reported.

The ruling was made by the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi and cannot be appealed.

The court rejected Hashemi's defence that she suffered from chronic mental illness and hallucinations, after it said psychiatric tests showed she was aware of her actions.

International media were denied access to her trial, which began in March.

Hashemi was arrested by Abu Dhabi intelligence officers during a raid at her home three days after the attacks in the UAE capital.

Hashemi showed no emotion as the verdict and sentence were read out and smiled and waved at her father and brother as she was led from court, said the reports.
