Worker crushed to death by marble slab

A 61-year-old man was killed Monday when a slab of marble fell on top of him in the central Italian town of Massa. He was third person to be crushed to death in marble quarries in the area in less than a month.

Carlo Morelli was pushing a cart laden with marble slabs when one slid off the cart and crushed him. Colleagues rushed to his aid and called emergency services but Morelli was pronounced dead soon after he reached hospital.

"We must have better training and security awareness and also review rules on pension eligibility in the sector," said Filca-Cisl trade union official Giacamo Bondielli, commenting on the tragedy.

"Some jobs are just not suitable for workers over a certain age."

Morelli supported his his wife, his 35-year-old daughter and his small grandson with his wages.

Prosecutors are probing the deaths in mid-April of 46-year-old Federico Benedetti and 55-year-old Roberto Ricci Antonioli, who died in a rockslide at a marble quarry in nearby Carrara.
