Italy's 3-2 win against England on penalties in the Euro 2020 final in London was "a great sporting endeavour" and a victory for the whole country, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio stated on Monday.
"The (UEFA) European Championship victory "was a great sporting endeavour and a triumph for the whole nation. The entire world is looking admiringly at Italy," Di Maio wrote on Facebook.
The premier and foreign minister of "very many countries" have written to Di Maio to say they supported Italy in Sunday's showdown, he wrote.
"They gunned for Italy, for a youthful team that never gave up," read the post.
Di Maio "could not be prouder to represent this splendid nation in the world, a country which makes the difference in every field," the post went on.
It is Italy's first European title win since 1968.
"The champions from our national team and Matteo Berrettini, Wimbledon finalist, are due today at the (presidential) Quirinale Palace and at the prime minister's office (in Rome) where we will congratulate them on their huge success," the post underlined.
