The European Union and China are "major economies and global players" whose relations impact the entire world, EU Council president Antonio Costa stated ahead of an EU-China summit in Beijing on Thursday.

"50 years of bilateral relations, 25th #EUChina summit on 24 July," Costa wrote Monday on X (formerly Twitter).

"The EU and China are major economies, global actors. How we engage and cooperate matters - globally," Costa continued.

"Looking forward to engaging with President Xi and Premier Li on all aspects of our relationship," Costa underlined.

The 25th EU-China summit marks 50 years of bilateral ties and underlines the importance the EU attaches to a fair and balanced relationship with China, the EU Council, the bloc's decision-making body, wrote on its website.

The summit focus will be the state of bilateral relations and global geopolitical challenges, including Russia's nearly-three-year old occupation of Ukraine.

Mutually beneficial EU-China trade, climate change, the green transition and multilateralism are also on the summit agenda, according to the EU Council website.
