"My family has been the subject of continuous attacks and threats motivated solely by the desire to harm me, the worst kind of partisan politics. Unfortunately I have no reason to believe these attacks will end." This is how Joe Biden announces that he has signed, in the last hours as president, pre-emptive pardon measures for his brother James Biden, together with his wife Sara Jones Biden, his sister Valerie Biden Owens, together with her husband John Owens, and the his other brother Francis Biden.
Adding that he believes "in the rule of law" and that he is "optimistic that the strength of our legal institutions will ultimately prevail over politics", Biden however states that "baseless and politically motivated investigations destroy lives, safety and finances of those targeted and their families". The measures to defend these family members come after the one already announced in November to protect his son Hunter.
