Italy's envoy to Iraq, Niccolo Fontana held talks with parliament speaker and Sunni Muslim lawmaker Haibat Halbousi in Baghdad, the embassy wrote Monday on X.
"Amb @niccoloffontana was received by the parliament speaker Haibat Halbousi. Focus on the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and on the political process in Iraq," read the post.
"Italy stands ready to strengthening its longstanding partnership with Iraq," the post underlined.
Iraq's parliament elected Halbousi as its speaker at its augural session on 29 December last year, launching a process to form a government that often takes months.
The parliament speaker plays a key role in keeping legislative order, mediating disputes and building consensus in Iraq's sectarian-oriented and often fragmented political system.
Iraq's news president and prime minister have yet to be appointed.
