No "instructions from the bench". Viktor Orban writes this on X, addressing European leaders, in view of the announced meeting in Alaska between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, after the Hungarian premier withdrew from the declaration released in the last few hours.

"Just four days before the historic summit between President Trump and President Putin, the European Council attempted to issue a statement on behalf of all EU heads of state and government. Before the liberal choir begins its new rendition of the favorite tune 'Putin's Puppet', I decided to share why I could not support the statement on behalf of Hungary," writes Orban, who indicates three points.

"The statement attempts to set conditions for a meeting to which EU leaders are not invited," it reads. "The fact that the EU has been sidelined is sad enough, and the only thing that could make matters worse would be if we started giving instructions from the bench. The only sensible move for EU leaders is to promote an EU-Russia summit based on the US-Russia meeting." And he concludes: "Let's give peace a chance."
