Italy's anti-migrant interior minister Matteo Salvini on Wednesday voiced support for a directive from the government's top representative in Florence imposing an 8pm curfew on asylum-seekers and to open their mail and monitor their finances.
''A curfew and greater checks for immigrants who are accommodated in the city. The prefect of Florence has done well," Salvini stated, referring to Laura Lega.
"Whoever comes here at the Italian tax payer's expense is not on vacation and must obey simple rules," Salvini said.
Florence's centre-left mayor Dario Nardella and the surrounding Tuscany region's governor Enrico Rossi have sharply criticised Lega's recent directive - on legal and human rights grounds.
