Italy's first inter-government summit with Albania - at which the two countries inked an economic cooperation deal and 15 other accords - was an "historic" day for bilateral ties, premier Giorgia Meloni stated.

"Today can be described as historic for our bilateral relations, not only because it is the first time that our governments have met in this format, but also because of the quantity and quality of the bilateral technical and governmental agreements that were signed," Meloni said.

Meloni was speaking at the end of the summit held at Rome's 17th-century Villa Doria Pamphili, which Albania's prime minister Edi Rama attended.

Areas covered by Thursday's bilateral accords range from defence, security and migration to energy, infrastructure, the environment, health, innovation and training.
