Italy on Friday underlined its continuing support for "a just and sustainable" two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and urged the re-launch of negotiations between the two sides.
Foreign minister Luigi Di Maio reaffirmed Italy's stance on the long-running conflict in the Middle East during a virtual meeting with Arab ambassadors to Italy, according to a foreign ministry statement.
"On the issue of the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians, Minister Di Maio recalled Italy's continuing support for a two-state solution that is just, sustainable and in line with international law," said the statement.
Di Maio "stressed the priority need to relaunch negotiations between the parties, also by deepening coordination between the European Union and the Arab League," the statement added.
Di Maio and the Arab envoys also looked at the situation in the Mediterranean region ahead of the Group of Twenty foreign and trade ministerial meetings that he will chair over the coming months during this year's Italian G20 presidency, according to the statement.
Italy is keen to foster "sustainable and inclusive" recovery in the Mediterranean region following the devastating Coronavirus pandemic and wants to forge "a positive agenda" with a focus on managing common goods such as health, the environment and natural resources.
