Around 100 migrants on Thursday held a peaceful protest march in the Calabrian town of San Ferdinando after a policemen shot dead a migrant who allegedly stabbed him.

The migrants marched to the town hall from a sprawling tent encampment housing seasonal migrant farm workers outside San Ferdando.

The protest was organised by the 'Cenacolo' association which assists migrants in Italy.

An investigation is underway into the incident on Wednesday when a Carabinieri police officer opened fire on a Malian migrant at the tent camp, killing the man after he allegedly attacked him with a knife.

Police had been called to the camp to break up a fight that reportedly broke out between the Malian and another migrant over a stolen wallet.

After the shooting, the Italian government ordered security to be boosted at the tent camp, which houses hundreds upon thousands of migrants working in the orange groves around the Calabrian port of Gioia Tauro.

San Ferdinando, on the outskirts of the Calabrian town of Rosarno, has been the scene of repeated clashes between migrants, many of whom are from sub-Saharan Africa.

Over 1,000 Africans fled the camp in 2010 and scores were injured after two days of clashes between migrants, police and locals.

Rights activists have criticised the squalid conditions at the camp and the exploitation of migrant workers in the area as well as hostility towards them.
