Hardline interior minister and deputy premier Matteo Salvini pledged on Monday to double the number of migrant deportation centres in Italy, a drive he said the populist government had launched since it took power in June.
"I will double the number of migrant expulsion centres," Salvini told Radio Globo's 'Morning Show' programme.
"We are reopening expulsion centres in various regions and identifying new sites in order to double the total," he said.
In early 2019, the government will see the first results of its efforts to double the place available" in these centres, said Salvini.
Salvini has vowed to deport half a million migrants from Italy, where over 700,000 have arrived by boat since 2004.
