Gentiloni unveils new Italian cabinet

Italy's premier-designate Paolo Gentiloni on Monday revealed the line-up of ministers for his government, vowing to consolidate the work of his centre-left precedessor Matteo Renzi and ensure political stability.

Italy's former interior minister Angelino Alfano has been named foreign minister. He heads a small centre-right party that was a crucial part of the previous ruling coalition.

Economist Pier Carlo Padoan remains finance minister in Gentiloni's proposed government. The health minister in Renzi's government, Beatrice Lorenzin, and Renzi's defence minister Roberta Pinotti have also kept their jobs.

Maria Elena Boschi becomes under-secretary to the cabinet office after serving as reforms minister under Renzi.

The new cabinet was due to be sworn in at 8pm local time.

The new government will be put to an approval vote in the lower and upper houses of the Italian parliament on Tuesday and Wednesday, Gentiloni said.

Gentiloni, a loyalist from Renzi's Democratic Party, was foreign minister in Renzi's government, and is said to have gained international respect in the role.

Italy's president Sergio Mattarella on Sunday asked 62-year-old Gentiloni to replace Renzi, who resigned last week after his crushing defeat in a crucial referendum on constitutional reforms.

Opposition parties have ruled out joining a national unity government and want snap elections, while Mattarella wants an amended electoral law to ensure more stable governance before fresh polls are held.

Elections are due in 2018 but many observers believe they will be held sooner.

Key challenges facing Gentiloni include an Italian banking crisis and a rise in popular support for anti-establishment and eurosceptic parties.
