Pope Francis will publish his keenly awaited encyclical on the environment on 18 June, the Vatican said on Thursday.

The Vatican said it had announced the publication date of the encyclical "to avoid confusion owing to the dissemination of unconfirmed information".

The document is expected to address need to protect creation by combatting climate change and environmental degradation - a theme repeatedly raised by Francis.

The possible causes of global warming, and the role that Christians need to play in the future of global warming are also likely among likely topics of the encyclical.

Key UN climate talks are taking place in Paris later this year, and environmentalists are thrilled the pope is lending his moral authority to climate change.

The December climate talks are widely seen as the last opportunity for a global deal to manage carbon emissions and set some limit to rising temperatures.

The first encyclical to be issued by Francis, 'Lumen Fidei', begun by his predecessor Benedict XVI, was published on 29 June, 2013.

It centred on the theme of religious faith.
