Francesca Chaouqui, the woman on trial for leaking confidential documents to two journalists who wrote tell-all books about mismanagement and graft within the Vatican, had a baby boy on Tuesday, a spokesman said.

The boy has been named Pietro Elia Antonio and weighs a healthy 3.7 kilogrammes, the spokesman, Federico Lombardi, said.

The trial of Chaouqui, two Italian journalists, a high-ranking Vatican cleric and his assistant is due to end in July. All five defendants have been charged by the Vatican with "Crimes against the Security of the State” and could face prison terms of between four and eight years.

Chaouqui, 34, who was a member of a former financial reform commission set up by Pope Francis, denies any wrongdoing in the case, claiming she has been made a scapegoat and only acted for the good of the Church.

The Vatican has been widely criticised for prosecuting the two Italian journalists, a move seen as harming freedom of speech and information.

The trial began six months ago but has been adjourned several times.

It resumed in mid-March after a three month break to allow the defendants more time to prepare their defence, but was immediately put on hold for another three weeks to allow the pregnant Chaouqui to rest.
