Police in Palermo on Tuesday seized companies and assets worth more than 15 million euros from Francesco Paolo Alamia, a businessman with alleged ties to the Sicilian mafia.

The assets included more than 100 items of real estate, land, three companies, five vehicles and 21 bank accounts containing 900,000 euros.

Following a probe by tax police, anti-mafia prosecutors in Palermo ordered the assets to be impounded from Alamia, who is resident in the nearby coastal town of Villabate.

Although he has never been jailed for mafia association, Alamia was a business partner of mafia-linked former mayor of Palermo Vito Ciancimino during the 1970s and 1980s.

Investigators said Alamia was also close to a notorious Sicilian mafia hitman, Pino Greco, who was convicted in absentia of murdering 58 people.
