Police on Monday arrested 58 people in Italy's southern Puglia region accused of crimes including mafia association, conspiracy to murder, drugs trafficking and carrying and possessing illegal arms.
The suspects were detained in the provinces of Bari and Lecce, police said.
Wiretapped conversations suggested the suspects belonged to the local Sacra Corona Unita mafia, or were in the process of joining the crime syndicate, according to investigators.
