Houthi leader 'killed in coalition air raid'

Houthi militia commander Yahya al-Eryani and five of his bodyguards were killed by war planes from a Saudi-led coalition on Wednesday, Al-Arabiya satellite TV channel reported.

The air strike struck Eyrani's car in the southern Khalid ibn al-Walid army camp near the coastal city of Mokha, according to All-Arabiya.

Violent clashes broke out between the Yemeni army loyal to the internationally recognised government of president Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi and Houthi militia at the perimeter of the camp, the broadcaster said.

Coalition aircraft supporting the Yemeni troops have launched more than 30 airstrikes on Khalid ibn al-Walid and the surrounding areas since Monday evening, Al-Arabiya said, citing local sources.

The Saudi-led coalition is backing Yemen's government in its war with the rebel Houthi movement.

The conflict in Yemen escalated in March 2015 when the Saudi-led coalition began its air campaign against the Houthis. It has left at least 7,500 people dead and 40,000 injured, according to the United Nations.
