"Africa, like many areas of the world, is about to experience a tidal wave in the prevalence of diabetes, to be followed by a wave of cardiovascular-related complications. This will be an enormous burden on the healthcare systems of these countries," says Dr. Jonathan Levy, medical lead for the Tour and researcher at the Oxford Centre of Diabetes, Churchill Hospital, Oxford, UK.

The Tour will engage over 1,000 general practitioners, medical students and pharmacists in Angola, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Uganda. The workshops, in collaboration with African universities, showcase evidence-based data and demonstrate diabetes management approaches through interactive clinical case studies.

"The young doctors we're reaching are the healthcare providers of the future - the leaders, the ones urging governments to take action to prevent and treat diabetes," adds Dr. Levy.

"If the purpose of medical research, education and practice are to enhance the quality of life for people across the planet, EXCEMED's CME Tour of Africa is not only timely, but essential.  This initiative is far-reaching, powerful and cost-effective. We are proud of this project," says Rachel Clark, CEO of EXCEMED.

Healthcare providers unable to attend the live events can go to http://www.managediabetesonline.org, an EXCEMED website, to access educational outcomes from each leg of the Tour. The CME Tour is possible thanks to an educational grant from the German company Merck, the world's oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company and its Capacity Advancement Program - part of the Merck Corporate Social Responsibility agenda and Merck Global Health platform.
