Forming humanitarian passageways with Afghanistan's new rulers is "unthinkable", foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said Tuesday as the Taliban unveiled an acting cabinet which includes militants accused of attacks on US and Nato forces over the past 20 years.
"It is unthinkable to have humanitarian corridors with the Taliban," Di Maio told La 7 TV channel's In Onda programme.
The appointment as premier of Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, one of the Taliban movement's founders, who is on a UN blacklist, and of FBI-wanted Sirajuddin Haqqani, leader of the Haqqani militant group, as interior minister, "is not encouraging", Di Maio said.
"We will judge the Taliban according to their actions, not their words, and so far the facts are not all positive," Di Maio stated.
Italy will be looking to work with the United Nations refugee agency in Afghanistan and in neighbouring countries to help refugees, the minister said.
