At least 56 militants from the Islamic State jihadist group were killed in a military operation in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province on Tuesday local media quoted officials as saying.
The operation deployed air power and ground forces in Nangharhar's Achin district, the Khaama Press news site said on its website, citing a police statement.
Several foreign insurgents were also among those killed and weapons, ammunition and explosives were seized during the operation, according to the statement.
IS did not immediately comment on the operation, Khaama Press said.
The operation came as Afghan security forces with the support from foreign have stepped up their offensives against local Islamic insurgents forces in a bid to maintain law and order in remote areas.
Hundreds of people on Tuesday protested against an alleged US drone strike against a house that killed and wounded "many" civilians in Achin district, Pajhwok news agency reported.
The Afghan and US forces based in Afghanistan are regularly conducting strikes against IS, which has been attempting to expand its foothold in the country.
