Italian found dead in Egypt 'had ear mutilated'

The Italian PhD student found dead in the Egyptian capital Cairo had one of his ears mutilated and bore other signs of torture, a local broadcaster cited the chief prosecutor in the case as saying on Thursday.

"One of Regeni's ears had been cut and he had other signs of torture including cigarette burns, bruising and abrasions," said Ahmad Nagi, quoted by Egypt's Al-Ghad TV on is website.

Regeni's body, nude from the waist downwards was found in a ditch on the outskirts of Cairo, late on Wednesday, the TV network reported.

The death of the 28-year-old Cambridge student was caused by "wounds inflicted by sharp implements" Egyptian daily Dotsmr cited coroners as saying earlier on Thursday.

AP quoted Egyptian prosecutor leading the investigation team on the case as saying Regeni had met a “slow death”.

Regeni vanished in Cairo on 25 January the fifth anniversary of the Tahrir Square demonstrations which led to the downfall of president Hosni Mubarak.

He disappeared after leaving his home in an upper middle-class district of Cairo to meet a friend downtown, but never arrived, the friend said. He had been in Egypt since September, researching the economy.

Italy has summoned Egypt's ambassador Amr Mostafa Kamal Helmy over Regeni's death and is demanding a full investigation.
