Italy's interior minister Luciana Lamorgese on Friday called on for a "road-map" for Europe to clinch repatriation deals with African countries where no accord is yet in place.

"We need a European road-map to negotiate readmission agreements that have not yet been with those African countries where such accords have not yet been activated," Lamorgese said.

Lamorgese was speaking after talks at the interior ministry in Rome on Friday with her French counterpart Gerald Darmanin.

Larmorgese has stressed that Italy is one of the main gateways to Europe and has called for help from the rest of Europe in managing the migrant influx.

More than 27,000 refugees and migrants reached Italy by boat so far this year, nearly three times the number at the same point of 2019, according to interior ministry data.

Over 11,000 people arrived this year from Tunisia, which has signed repatriation agreements with Italy allowing it to send back illegal migrants aboard twice-weekly flights.
