Leaders of Italy, the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom agreed on Monday to join forces to help war-ravaged Ukraine's population, calling the conflict "a grave humanitarian emergency".

"Faced with a grave humanitarian emergency, the leaders committed to coordinating their efforts to help Ukrainians fleeing the conflict and those trapped in their homeland," said a statement from Draghi's office.

Draghi, US president Joe Biden and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, Germany's chancellor Olaf Scholz and British prime minister Boris Johnson made the pledge during phone talks ahead of a NATO summit on Thursday, the statement said.

"The leaders reaffirmed the importance the unity of intent and action shown in the face of the war in Ukraine and its repercussions," the statement underlined.

While in Brussels, Biden will take part in a European Union leaders' summit being held on Thursday and Friday.

The European Council summit will centre on support for Ukraine and its population and on strengthening transatlantic cooperation in response to Russia’s almost month-old invasion of the former Soviet state.
