Lasting ceasefire, removal of foreign mercenaries top priorities for Libya - Italy

Libya's political factions should work for the "full implementation" of a truce agreed last October between the country's warring sides, key to which is with the withdrawal of all foreign mercenaries and the re-opening of the Sirte-Misrata coastal road, Italy's primer Mario Draghi stated on Monday.

"We encourage all Libyan actors to move forwards in the process that is underway in order to achieve the priority goals: the full implementation of the ceasefire, starting with the withdrawal of all foreign mercenaries and the re-opening of the Sirte-Misrata coastal road," Draghi said.

He was speaking a press conference after talks in Rome with his Libyan counterpart Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and a bilateral business forum.

Also key to war-torn Libya's stabilisation is the reunification of its political and economic institutions and its security apparatus, as well essential social and economic reforms and the holding of national elections at the end of the year, Draghi noted.

"We stress our determination to work with Libya's interim executive authority (government) and to support it during the next, crucial stages of institutional transition," Draghi said.

Italy wants to collaborate with "international partners" in the process of stabilising Libya, including the European Union, which needs to "structure" and boost its funding to the country, Draghi underlined.
