Italian military serving in western Afghanistan are "safe and well" after a rocket attack on their armoured vehicle Wednesday, 20 kilometres from Herat, defence ministry sources said.
"The rocket did not directly hit the vehicle but exploded nearby, causing slight damage. The Italian soldiers carried out the necessary steps to return to base," the defence staff sources stated.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack which was reportedly carried out by rogue Afghan security personnel.
NATO's Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan confirmed the incident and said no coalition member had been injured.
Taliban insurgents routinely urge members of Afghan security forces to attack NATO personnel serving in Afghanistan, most of whom are advisers.
