Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and German counterpart Annalena Baerbock on Monday assessed tensions between Ukraine and Russia, whose troop build-up near their borders have stoked fears that Moscow could soon launch an invasion.
During their talks in Rome, Di Maio and Baerbock looked at "the situation on Europe's eastern borders, between Russia, Belarus and Ukraine... with a view to necessary strengthening of European foreign policy and security to defend our shared values and interests", Di Maio said.
The two ministers also mulled the issue of migration both within and outside Europe, he said.
"Europe can and must be a global actor, supporting multi-lateralism and a rules-based international order, fostering international cooperation on the global challenges - from health to climate change and sustainability," Di Maio underlined.
