Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday accused Washington of using Kurdish forces in a bid to partition Syria, urging it not to “play with fire” and to act in the country's long-term interests, according to state-run Sputnik news agency.
"It would be better if they stopped playing very dangerous games that lead to the division of the Syrian state,” Lavrov said, cited by Sputnik.
“The Kurds are being used in a game which has no relation to their own interests,” Sputnik quoted Lavrov as saying.
Lavrov urged the US not to "play with fire" in Syria and carefully consider its actions "not on the basis of the immediate needs of today's political situation but rather from the long-term interests of the Syrian people and all the peoples of this region, including the Kurds."
The top Russian diplomat accused the US of using the Kurds "for geopolitical narrow-minded purposes".
"Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity must be preserved, in accordance with international law and UN resolutions," Lavrov stated.
