Terrorist attacks carried out by so-called 'lone wolves' are the biggest threat to Italy's security and boat migrants are undergoing "high" levels of screening, national police chief Franco Gabrielli, said on Tuesday.
"Most worrying from a counter-terrorism perspective are lone wolves. We have had near-misses where suspects who were expelled from Italy were poised to carry out an attack," Gabrielli stated.
"But until now we have not detected any kind of organisation structure," he told an event in Rome to mark the 166th anniversary of the Italian police's foundation.
"The level of screening is high and we are doing everything we can," Gabrielli said.
