Qatar will send a "high-profile" delegation to the international conference on Libya that Italy is hosting in Palermo on 12-13 November, interior minister and deputy prime minister and Matteo Salvini stated on Tuesday.

"There will be a high-profile delegation from Qatar," Matteo Salvini wrote on Facebook from a visit to Qatar which he said was focused on security, energy and economic ties.

Libya's main power-brokers as well as key international players are expected to attend the two-day conference aimed at stabilising Italy's conflict-wracked ex-colony.

Salvini was due to meet Qatar's emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, its prime minister and foreign minister, an Italian business delegation and to attend an international security fair, he tweeted early on Tuesday.

"I found a country that is growing and is welcoming, which wants to work with Italy. There are many opportunities for Italian firms - Qatar loves 'Made in Italy'," read a subsequent tweet.

"This is the kind of partnership I am interested in," the tweet added.
