Anti-immigrant politician Matteo Salvini said Monday he hoped Italy's premier Matteo Renzi, German chancellor Angela Merkel and France's president Francois Hollande were forced onto a boat bound for Africa.
"Those three disgraces, Renzi, Merkel and Hollande are meeting on the Italian aircraft carrier Garibaldi to discuss Europe's future," Salvini tweeted, referring to a mini-summit taking place off Naples.
"The only good news for European citizens would be if the three of them were abandoned at sea aboard a boat heading for Africa," read the tweet from Salvini, who heads Italy's Northern League party.
Europe's ongoing refugee crisis was expected to be high on the agenda at the summit being held on the tiny Italian island of Ventotene.
The outspoken Salvini last week accused Italy's president Sergio Mattarella of abetting people-traffickers after the head of state urged solidarity with migrants.
He came under fire in July when he likened the speaker of Italy's lower house of parliament Laura Boldrini to an inflatable sex-doll.
Salvini often targets Boldrini, a former spokeswoman for the United Nations refugee agency, who regularly appeals for humane treatment for immigrants.
