Italy's deputy foreign minister Marina Sereni will accompany foreign minister Luigi Di Maio to the 76th UN General Assembly in New York this week, where key issues include climate change mitigation, disarmament and health.
Sereni is part of a small Italian delegation headed by Di Maio. She will take part in the main events being promoted by Italy, starting with high-level ones chaired by Di Maio that will focus on Afghan women and girls following last month's Taliban takeover.
Sereni will also hold a number meetings with senior UN agency officials during her attendance at the UNGA. Unlike 2020, when the session was conducted almost entirely virtually due to the COVID- pandemic, over 100 leaders and other high-ranking representatives are due to deliver their addresses in person.
