The military's seizure of power in Sudan and reported arrest of political leaders, among them premier Abdallah Hamdok, is causing Italy "deep concern", deputy foreign minister Marina Sereni tweeted on Monday.
"Deep concern for the news about #Sudancoup," read the tweet.
"We ask to come back asap to the transition process to democracy, supported by the international community, and the immediate liberation of PM Hamdock and all the political leaders arrested."
Protestors took to the streets in Sudan's capital Khartoum after the military coup and overthrow of a transitional government that was due to lead the country to democracy after the overthrow two years ago of long-time autocrat Omar al-Bashir in a popular uprising.
