Hariri 'in an ambiguous situation' says Bassil

Lebanon's foreign minister Gebran Bassil on Wednesday urged the return of his country's prime minister Saad Hariri from Saudi Arabia, saying he was in "an ambiguous situation".

"It is not normal for our premier to find himself in an ambiguous situation," Bassil told reporters in Rome after a meeting with his Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano.

"The whole of Lebanon is waiting for him (Hariri) to come back and there is no reason why he should not have done so already," Bassil went on.

"To get out of this ambiguous situation, he needs to come back."

"The things that are said when one is in an ambiguous situation can be interpreted in an ambiguous way. We need to speak to him in Lebanon," Bassil stated.

"Otherwise we will continue to think of external interference."

Bassil was referring to the accusations of meddling in Lebanon's internal affairs and the region levelled against Iran by Hariri, during his broadcast resignation speech from Saudi Arabia on 4 November.

Hariri, a Sunni Muslim with Saudi ties charged Iran with sowing "discord, devastation and destruction" in the Middle East and said he sensed there was an assassination plot against him.

"A prime minister normally resigns in his own country, not while he is abroad," Bassil said.
