The gun attacks on two mosques by suspected white supremacists that left at least 49 people dead and over 20 injured in Christchurch New Zealand on Friday are "a very worry alarm bell", Italy's president Sergio Mattarella stated.
"What happened this morning in New Zealand is a very worrying alarm bell," Mattarella said in remarks at a ceremony in Ancona to mark the start of the Universita Politecnica's academic year.
The attacks, which took place during Friday prayers, were the worst mass shooting in New Zealand's history. They have drawn international condemnation.
A man in his late twenties has been charged with murder over the shootings and three other suspects were held, one of whom was released, according to police.
