Italy's envoy, Lebanon's grand mufti underline ties, interreligious dialogue

Bilateral ties and inter-faith dialogue are key, Italy's ambassador to Lebanon Nicoletta Bombardiere and the country's grand mufti and top Sunni Muslim cleric Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian agreed at a meeting Thursday, the embassy tweeted.
"Talks highlighted the importance of bilateral relations between Italy and Lebanon, particularly Italy's overseas aid role, and also stressed the value of interreligious dialogue," read the tweet.
Lebanon's technocrat government is seeking help from the International Monetary Fund amid economic meltdown after slowing capital inflows and protests against corruption last autumn sparked a political, banking and financial crisis that deepened this year with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The country’s power-sharing system is based on 18 recognized religious sects in delicate balance between Christians, Sunni and Shia Muslims and other groups.
