Plane skids off runway on landing at Rome airport

A small Cessna aircraft overshot the runway and tipped onto a wing when it landed at Rome's Ciampino airport on Wednesday due to a problem with its undercarriage, the airport said.

"As the plane was landing it tipped onto its wing. Technicians are investigating how to right the plane and remove it from the runway," the airport stated.

Besides two crew members, the plane was carrying two doctors, none of whom were injured in the incident. It had taken off from the Sardinian capital, Cagliari, and was transporting transplant organs.

In August, a cargo plane skidded off the runway at Bergamo airport in northern Italy, crashed through a perimeter fence and ended up wedged across a busy road after landing in bad weather.

The airport was closed for several hours after the crash and some flights were rescheduled and re-routed through Milan’s Malpensa airport.

A massive crane was used to remove the plane from the road, which was closed to traffic.
