Four children among ten people found alive inside Italian avalanche hotel

Ten people including four children have been located alive inside the avalanche-hit ski hotel in Italy's central Abruzzo region and are being rescued, Italian fire brigade sources told Adnkronos on Friday.

The survivors of Wednesday's avalanche said they were trapped in an area of the Hotel Rigopiano in the snowbound skiing hamlet of Farindola and to have been protected from the sub-zero temperatures by a sloping roof.

The survivors have spent at least 40 hours buried in the snow and rubble.

Helicopters were on their way to Farindola to ferry the avalanche survivors to hospital once dug out of the snow and ice. At least 30 people including guests and staff members were inside the hotel when the avalanche struck at 5.30 pm on Wednesday.

The massive snow slide crushed part of the three-storey building, shifting it 10 metres and burying it under a two-metre wall of snow.

Rescue operations have been hampered by unusually heavy snowfalls in the mountainous region this week that have left roads impassable and villages and hamlets cut off.

Emergency services used turbines and snow ploughs over night to clear the road to Farindola and allow rescuers to get through.

The main road to Farindola was blocked off by heavy snow and gaining access has proved extremely difficult.

The first rescue team reached the remote resort early on Thursday after skiing across country for six hours though the night.

Prosecutors have opened a manslaughter probe over the disaster which came after four strong earthquakes rocked central Italy on Wednesday.
