Italy sends condolences for Texas church massacre

Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano on Monday expressed "deepest condolences" for the victims of a gunman who opened fire on worshippers at a church in the US state of Texas, killing at least 26 people.

"Deepest condolences and Italy's closeness to the American people for the massacre in Texas," Alfano tweeted.

"We wish a swift recovery for the injured," the tweet continued.

The people who died in the shooting on Sunday at the First Baptist Church in the small town of Sutherland Springs were aged five to 72.

A total 20 other people were injured in the shooting, the Texas governor Greg Abbott said.

The attack was the "largest mass shooting in the state's history," Abbott stated.

US media named the gunman as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, of nearby New Braunfels, Texas.

He was found dead in his car after a high-speed chase.
