Sebastiano Cardi, currently director general of the foreign ministry's political affairs and security department, was on Thursday named the new chief of foreign minister Luigi Di Maio's cabinet.
Cardi takes over from Ettore Sequi, who was appointed director general of the foreign ministry on Tuesday.
It is believed that Pasquale Ferrara, Italy's former ambassador to Algeria and special envoy for Libya, will replace Cardi at the helm of the ministry's political affairs and security department.
It is understood that Italy's current ambassador to Kosovo, Nicola Orlando, will succeed Ferrara.
The new appointments come just over a week after the ministry's previous director general, Elisabetta Belloni, became the new head of Italy's secret services - the woman appointed to the role.
