Escalating tensions between China and Taiwan following a visit to the island by United States house speaker Nancy Pelosi "complicate" the prospects for a ceasefire in the five-month-old war in Ukraine, according to Italy's premier, Mario Draghi.
"It is not a positive development, also concerning the war in Ukraine," Draghi told reporters at his office in Rome Thursday after China fired 11 ballistic missiles off Taiwan following Pelosi's visit on Wednesday.
"We hoped that China could help reach a ceasefire, through its relations with Russia: I don't know what real possibility there can be of a ceasefire," Draghi continued.
"Things are now complicated in that regard," Draghi said, noting there had been no news of progress on a ceasefire from talks involving Turkey.
