G7 finance ministers' approval of a price cap for Russian oil is "a decisive step forwards", Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio tweeted on Friday, urging the European Union to agree a gas price cap.
"A decisive step forward at the G7 finance ministers meeting on a cap on the price of Russian oil," read the tweet.
"Now the same determination at the EU to obtain a gas price cap," the tweet added.
Russia said in a statement it will halt supplies to countries implementing the G7's oil price cap aimed at slashing revenues for Moscow's six-month-old war in Ukraine.
In a joint statement, G7 finance ministers said they plan to align the oil price cap with the start of EU sanctions banning oil imports to the block from 5 December.
A gas price cap will be on the agenda at an EU energy ministers meeting on 9 September, Italy's ecological transition minister Roberto Cingolani said in a statement on Thursday.
