Embassy, victims' families mark 2nd anniversary of Beirut port blast

Italian embassy staff in Beirut and families of victims of the cataclysmic explosion at the city's port on 4 August 2020 held a minute's silence on Thursday to mark the second anniversary of the disaster.

"A minute of silence, with diplomatic colleagues and members of the victims’ families, to remember the tragic blast of August 4th 2020 at Beirut Port and to stand for justice," the embassy tweeted.

Thousands of people marched in Beirut on Thursday to protest the devastating explosion that killed least 220 people, injured 5,000 and flattened swathes of the city, leaving 300,000 homeless.

No Lebanese official has yet been held to account for what was one of the biggest non-nuclear blasts in history, caused by massive quantities of ammonium nitrate that had been unsafely stored at the port since 2013.
