The foreign ministry is continuing to closely follow the case of a businessman from northern Italy who has been in prison in Sudan since 1 April on charges of fraud.
"Together with the foreign ministry, the embassy in Sudan has followed right from the start the case of our countryman being held in Khartoum on charges of defrauding Sudanese companies," said a ministry statement.
Veneto native Marco Zennaro has had 58 consular visits by embassy staff, which still take place at least twice a week and the embassy supplies him with food, clean clothes, books and other essentials, the statement noted.
"The embassy has lodged formal requests with Sudan's authorities and its institutions including the prime minister's office and the foreign minister, urging full respect for our fellow Italian's rights to healthcare and security, as well as a rapid solution to the case," the statement said.
"Today, Italy's deputy foreign minister Marina Sereni discussed the case in phone talks with Sudan's foreign undersecretary," the note concluded.
