The foreign affairs ministry said on Wednesday it is calling on airlines in countries that have halted international flights due to the coronavirus pandemic to arrange special ones to repatriate stranded Italians.
"It is an unprecedented situation, all over the world our compatriots are trying to return to Italy," the ministry said in a statement.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is asking the airlines to activate special flights to allow the return to Italy of its citizens who are in other countries that, due to the coronavirus emergency, have suspended international flights."
The statement said Italians should visit the websites of Alitalia and Neos for information on available routes.
